2017 BoSho Results Correction

DOH! It turns out Amier Maxwell is better known to her friends as Amiee Maxwell. She finished third on the women's side in 5:27 and change. (In our defense, the chilly morning made handwriting a little hard to decipher, and the photo of Emanuel Lewis associated with the gmail account may have further confused event administrators! We apologize for the inconvenience and hope our chip timing system will be functioning properly next year.) Hope to see many of you at Grandeur Peak.

Records are made to be broken, and we had a record number of participants, record number of finishers, and new men's course record. Noah Brautigam turned in an impressive 3:38 finish, knocking 10 minutes off of Karl Meltzer's prior course record. Karl's win at Zane Grey probably took some of the sting out of seeing that record fall. Perfect weather and course conditions certainly helped Noah pull off his great result. Quincy O'Connor and Andy Chrysler finished under 4 hours to round out the top three men.

Emily Sullivan was the first woman across the line in 4:47. Great comeback and great run. She always makes it look easy. Tasha Wooley was second in 5:05, while Suky Stewart edged Suzanne Lewis for the final podium spot. Once again, the million dollar prize for setting a marathon world record time went unclaimed.

Thanks to everybody who helped out-Tony De'Arcos (making his final appearance at BoSho before moving to AZ), Dave Hunt, Carter Williams, David Hayes, Brian, Bob, John, Dan, everyone else who pitched in, and all of you who showed up for the run.

All times, distances, and places are approximate. If that rankles, you may be in the wrong sport; you are definitely in the wrong event.

See you next year for the 19th running!

BoSho 2015

The oldest and most prestigious April marathon in Salt Lake City had its 16th running this year. The October 2008 edition of Trail Runner Magazine featured an article on Karl Meltzer. On the list of his impressive and outstanding accomplishments were his four wins at the BoSho. Yes, it is that prestigious. More humans have walked on the moon than have finished the course in under 4 hours.

The protest/appeals period is now closed, and final results are posted below. Overall, it would be hard to imagine better course conditions. Impressive turns by Dom Layfield and Bethany Lewis capped the day's events. Several times might have been faster but for a rogue hiker who moved flags at the top of the west loop above City Creek, sending several runners down a bushwack before deciding to turn back and find the trail.

None of this happens without the help of aid station volunteers and course markers. Many thanks to the following:

  Olaf Questereit
  Roxanne Sisson
  Dave Moore
  Deanna McLaughlin
  Brian Kamm
  Bob Adler
  Carter Williams
  Tony DeArcos

And thanks to everybody who came out to run on a beautiful April morning, and thank you for your aid station donations. See you at Grandeur Peak, Pie-n-Beer, Mill Creek 50k, and more.

The BoSho Race Committee.

Results: Millcreek 50k (Uphill Route) July 19-20, 2013

Results for the 2013 running of the Millcreek Canyon 50k are posted below as compiled by Brian Harward. Christian and Andy turned in incredible times, particularly given the condition of the Desolation Trail, at least what you could see of it through the overgrown wildflowers, and Christian's reportedly defective headlamp. Emily, Suzanne and Amy continued their habit of finishing in front. Shane Martin understandably could not remember his finishing time, having finished Hard Rock just one week earlier: "My Hardrock legs showed up and I was done!"

Of note, Wayne Harrell and Michael Keeley checked in at elbow fork, but they actually continued to Dog Lake, Desolation Lake, along the Crest Trail, and finishing at Snowbird. Epic Three Canyon night run!

Thanks to Ken and Rich for continuing to put this great event on, particularly given the volume of water they had to lug up to Dog Lake for the record number of runners. The aid stations were impressive, the moon was nearly full, the weather was perfect, and anybody who did not have a great time must have slept through it.

Brighton Marathon 2013

Irv's torture chamber was briefly gone but returned. So it went with the Brighton Marathon on July 7, 2013. Recent rains ensured that the trail conditions and weather were perfect, as reflected in very fast times by Bob Mueller and Andy Johnson.

Those who took a more leisurely pace enjoyed a spectacular wildflower display. Michael Kealey, Wayne Harrell, and Trent Thorn included Clayton Peak in their adventure and therefore got the most miles for their entry dollar. This was Trent's first marathon, having not gone more than 14 miles at a stretch previously. It will not likely be his last, or his fastest.

Speaking of tough, John Maack continues his comeback, and Deanne McLaughlin capped a 60+ mile week after a two month imposed taper for eye surgery. Both took the popular Guardsman road cutoff, wisely avoiding Clayton Peak. Jeremy Suwinski came out for ten miles as a final tuneup before HardRock. Thanks to Seth Hales for providing aid and assistance at Mill D and Gardsman's Pass, and Pete Stoughton for dropping water at Guardsman's as well. It was a great day in the great Wasatch Mountains.
